Driving in the rain is a challenge for even the moat experienced drivers. Rainy conditions are associated with higher accident rates and caution must be taken to avoid hazard to yourself and others. If you’re uncomfortable driving the rain, it’s best to avoid making trips until after skies have cleared. But for those of us who much drive even when it’s storming, we offer some simple tips to help keep you safe and moving:
1. Give other vehicles more space. Increase following distance between your car and the vehicle in front of you when traveling in rainy conditions. It will be more difficult to stop your vehicle on wet roadways. Giving yourself several car lengths distance will help you avoid crashes in the event that you need to abruptly stop.
2. Turn your lights on. Typically, state law will require this, but you should always turn your headlights on while driving in the rain. Visibility is greatly reduced during rainstorms. Turning on your headlights helps other vehicles see you.
3. Take your time. You should always adhere to the posted speed limit while driving. But in rainy conditions, it’s best to drive considerably slower than you normally would. As we’ve already discussed, wet roads reduce traction, visibility is lowered during storms and your vehicle’s reaction time is slower than usual. Taking your time will help you stay safe!
